Labor Day 2010

Well today is the Labor Day holiday and there is the 1st annual International Brewmasters Festival up at Moody Gardens in Galveston. Seems to be the only thing in town going on, besides Labor Day sales at stores. We were going to head to the beach today but it is rainy here.

I found a delicious recipe for sea scallops Saturday. The 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup white wine, I just poured in a medium splash of chardonnay. here is the page for Butter Fried Scallops. I didn't brown mine as dark as she had them, I was afraid of overcooking them. At the end, when it says turn off the heat & leave the pan set on the burner, I left it on for 3 minutes (timed it) and took it off. They were just right and really sweet. Wish I had bought more than a pound of scallops for that recipe! My husband is in training right now for a marathon (Wineglass Marathon up in Corning NY) so no bacon-wrapped until he's run it. My youngest has taken up running also.

We had our 22nd anniversary last week... hard to believe that we've been together 22 years! It doesn't seem like that long.. but again, then it seems like it's been forever that we've been together.

I was reading an account of the Bonus Army, at Acostia Flats. Don't know that bit of history? It was comprised of WW1 veterans and their families, who went to Washington DC during the depression to get now the money they had been promised in 1945. There is a button off to the right side about half-way down, that gives you a page that is an eyewitness account of that. Quite interesting.

On another note, a tropical storm has popped up in the Gulf - Hermine. So now I have that to look forward to! bleah!

Enjoy the long weekend.

Congrats on the anniversary...time flies when you're having fun.
    Scallops..,bring 'em on!!!
There is NO way (to me) that you can screw them up...except to NOT cook them...LOL.
    That recipe sounds delicious!

I had read about the Bonus Army...Wilson wanted to just "forget about it" (must have been the stroke...his wife was signing everything the last year of his Presidency)...the VETS wouldn't have any of that.

As to the storm...batten down those hatches!
Have a great week, & stay safe down there.

  2. The anniversary was fun - didn't make it to the beach, because of the rain - but we went to Richmond to do some shopping and then went to Olive Garden for the Neverending Pasta Bowl.

The rain has finally stopped from that storm - I saw on the news last night that a river by us was almost at crest stage, and that the county seat was setting up shelters in case of flooding. Our ditch filled up pretty good.

The scallops definitely will be made again - apart from bacon-wrapped on the grill, that is the best way to make them.

I had followed a rabbit trail from I forgot what..about the US army firing on citizens - as to whether they would or not - and it's already happened. Would it happen again? If the government spending breaks down like it did in Greece, and entitlements can't go out like they usually do - there will be rioting, and will they fire on citizens again?

I hope I am SO wrong, but I think we COULD have a form of martial-law in cities...

What I WOULD like to see is having the military allow LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS to be able to be duly-deputized by local law-enforcement to help THEM, becasue they are gonna need as much assistance as they can get.

I don't want to get shot or have MY firearms taken away because I'm "just a citizen", when I need them to protect MY house and family.

This could be a HUGE Pandora's Box if we're not very careful.

  4. I agree. It's going to come sooner than we think - Look at Greece. I know on GB he's gone from mostly advertising gold - to advertising buying seed - those with land in order to grow their own food will be those who can actually eat - -while those in cities will be at the government's mercies. I know this happened during the great depression also - My grandmother owned Kittys Kakes (a bakery) in Rochester, and my great grandma had a farm - so they had bread, milk and eggs -lots of french toast from bread that was too old to sell.

We have a bit over 2 acres, so there is a bit of land if nothing else we *can* grow our own food, plus an animal.
